D.C. Airbnb Hosts Earn $2.4 Million During 2018 College Graduations

May 19 Will Mark Airbnb’s Biggest Night In D.C. For 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 16, 2018 – Home sharing continues to be a valuable travel resource for thousands of travelers visiting the nation’s capital for special events. Airbnb’s D.C. hosts will earn $2.4 million in supplemental income sharing their homes during graduation events at the District’s five largest universities — American University; Catholic University; George Washington University; Georgetown University; and Howard University.

Over 21,700 Airbnb guest arrivals will occur during the graduation events — a combined jump of 14% from the spring 2017 commencement activities. And the commencement ceremonies at George Washington University and Georgetown University will contribute to Airbnb’s biggest night in the District of Columbia for 2018 to date with over 8,300 guest arrivals booked for the evening of May 19.

“Home to the some of the country’s top universities, D.C. is always a top destination during the spring graduation season and Airbnb creates a way for Washingtonians across all eight wards to benefit economically from these events while offering visiting families a more cost-effective way to travel,” said Will Burns, director of public policy for Airbnb in the District of Columbia.

The typical booked Airbnb listing during these graduation events ranged between $34 for a shared room to $148 for an entire home. And more and more District of Columbia families are using home sharing to help pay their mortgage, rent, save for retirement and age in place. Of the D.C. residents sharing their home during the graduation events, 2% are first-time Airbnb hosts, 52% are female hosts, and 8% are senior hosts (ages 60 and up).
