DDOT Begins Six-Phase Project to Rehabilitate Anacostia Freeway Bridges Over Nicholson St. SE

(Washington, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to begin a construction project to rehabilitate the Anacostia freeway bridges over Nicholson Street SE on or about June 4, 2018, weather permitting.

As part of DDOT’s ongoing commitment to safety, the six-phase project focuses on the rehabilitation of the bridge deck and adjoining ramps on I-295 over Nicholson Street to address deteriorating structural elements. The work will include temporary lane closures and construction-related detours that will impact traffic. The project is expected to be completed 375 calendar days from the project start date.

The initial phase will involve removing the existing median to provide additional lanes for maintenance of traffic. During the construction period of all phases, two lanes of traffic will remain open in both directions.

Crews will also conduct pavement restoration and sidewalk replacement along Nicholson Street SE which runs under the bridge. A covered walkway will be installed for pedestrians to access the waterfront and adjacent Fairlawn neighborhood. Temporary lane closures will create a one-way lane along Nicholson Street SE. Flaggers will assist vehicles in an alternating traffic pattern.

In order to expedite the construction work, the contractor is allowed to work longer hours and weekends. Signage and protective barriers will be used to guide motorists throughout the work zone area safely. Motorists should anticipate delays due to the shifting traffic patterns. Drivers are advised to stay alert while traveling to this location and to be observant of road work crews.
