SBOE Invites Public Comment on Credit Recovery 

Make Your Voice Heard at June 20 Public Meeting

Washington, DC- The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at 5:30 pm in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. At this meeting, the SBOE welcomes feedback from District residents on emergency and proposed credit recovery regulations provided to the State Board by OSSE earlier this month. We will also hear from Rashida Young, Senior Manager of the Equity and Fidelity Team at the DC Public Charter School Board related to the regulations. A representative from the District of Columbia Public Schools was invited to participate in this discussion.

Members of the public may register to testify at this link: http://bit.ly/SBOEPublicCommentJune. Each resident will have three minutes to provide their input on the regulations. If approved by the State Board, the emergency regulations would go into place for 120 days following publication in the DC Municipal Register. The proposed regulations would be published for additional public comment before being finalized.

“We look forward to hearing from students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and community advocates on this vital issue,” said Karen Williams, President of the State Board of Education. “Guardrails for credit recovery are essential to ensuring judicious use of such programs.”

The emergency and proposed regulations help define the framework in which schools have the ability to utilize credit recovery for students that take and fail a course required for high school graduation. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) will be required to create and document credit recovery policies on their websites and OSSE will compile this data for analysis. The State Board has recommended changes to the emergency and proposed regulations that would further encourage schools to utilize credit recovery in a very limited basis and only when it is the best possible avenue for the student.
