Sibley Memorial Hospital Receives Prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold Designation

Washington, D.C. (July 16, 2018) — The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Sibley Memorial Hospital’s new patient tower its LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold designation. LEED is the USGBC’s rating system for the design and construction of energy-efficient and high-performing buildings. According to USGBC, LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings.

“When we designed all of our new buildings, we did so with the express objective of making them as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible,” says Jerry Price, Sibley’s senior vice president of real estate and construction. “For example, we built two large cisterns to harvest runoff rain water that will be used to water our lawns and plants.  And we also have just installed the largest amount of green roofs of any health care facility in Washington, D.C.”

Sibley is also currently home to a LEED Gold certified radiation oncology facility and was previously recognized for its strong environmental practices by the District of Columbia Hospital Association when it awarded the hospital its Environmental Excellence Award in 2013.

In addition, Wolf Boltansky, owner representative, real estate and construction, points out that “Sibley has been designated as one of the 50 greenest hospitals in America by Becker’s Hospital Review.” According to Boltansky, this recognition was based in part on Sibley’s use of rain gardens, 12 bee hives, gardens for employees and its installation of the largest Gabion retaining wall in the area.
