Temporary Lane and Shoulder Closures on I-395 Begin September 17

Traffic Delays Are Anticipated – Motorists Should Allow Extra Travel Time

(Washington, D.C.) – The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will  implement a series of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) improvements along the freeways within the District of Columbia.

During this work DDOT will implement overnight lane and shoulder closures and impact traffic along I-395 at 14th Street.

Beginning Monday, September 17, 2018 the following single lane, ramp, and shoulder closures will be in place from 10:00 PM until 5:00 AM, weather permitting:

  • Northbound and Southbound I-395 over 14th Street SW
  • On and Off-Ramps to I-395 HOV Lanes
  • On and Off Ramps to 14th Street SW

DDOT anticipates this phase of the work will be complete by October 5, weather permitting.

ITS upgrades are an integral part of DDOT’s traffic management system that will help improve transportation safety, mitigate traffic congestion, and propel DDOT to employ advanced smart city technologies. This phase includes installation of fiber optic cable along I-395, I-695, I-295 and DC-295 (Anacostia Freeway).

Traffic controls will be in place to warn drivers approaching the areas. Motorists should anticipate moderate delays due to the lane closures. Drivers are advised to stay alert while traveling through these locations and to be aware of construction personnel working in the area.

All construction related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, utility companies, material and contract availability or other unforeseen conditions.
