The DC Lineup: The last weekend of the holiday season — and 2018
This season has filled our weekly lineups with joy, warmth and community spirit. We hope you’ve been able to get out and enjoy at least some of the many festivities in the District. If not, you still have plenty of options on our list this weekend.
It’s also the final weekend of the Season’s Greenings exhibit at the U.S. Botanic Garden and ZooLights at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.
The weather report calls for rain on Friday and cloudy conditions on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures ranging from 34 to 59 degrees.

The Anacostia Arts Center will host several screenings Saturday of the new ABC7 documentary “Leaving Anacostia,” about a local teen turning his life around. (Screenshot courtesy of ABC7) Film: There are a few chances to view the ABC7 documentary Leaving Anacostia this Saturday at the Anacostia Arts Center’s Black Box Theater, 1231 Good Hope Road SE. Showtimes are every hour starting at 12:15 p.m. with the last showing at 3:15 p.m., followed by a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. A year in the making, the film by reporter Jay Korff follows the story of a DC teen who turned his life around. Admission is free, with a Q&A after each showing.

Dance: Join The Washington Ballet in celebrating 15 years of showcasing The Nutcracker — just under the wire. This Friday’s performances are the last ones of the season. This version, adapted from the traditional production, is set in Georgetown in 1882 and includes prominent figures from U.S. history such as Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, plus Britain’s King George III as the Rat King and Gen. George Washington as the heroic Nutcracker. Choose either the 2 or 7 p.m. show on Friday, both at the Warner Theatre, 513 13th St. NW. Running time is about two hours with intermission. Tickets start at $32. Federal employees can use the code FEDERAL for a 50 percent discount, and the general public can use the code DANCE to get 20 percent off.

Dance: Step Afrika! presents the final performances of this season’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show this weekend. The dance company, dedicated to traditional stepping, will be joined by DJ Frosty the Snowman at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE. Tickets cost $25 for kids and $45 for adults, with discounts for groups of 10 or more. Kids are welcome to come 30 to 45 minutes early to make drums and shakers with the troupe. Showtimes are Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 4 p.m.

Food & Drink: This is the last weekend to check out the Miracle on 7th Street pop-up bar that opened on Black Friday and has delighted DC denizens with holiday-themed cocktails such as Snow Angels, Ice Skating and Cookie Dough & Snuggles ever since. The DC-based Drink Company produces this bar at 1843 7th St. NW, with the decor designed by Its special projects team of Matt Fox and Adriana Salame-Aspiazu. The interior features “thousands of ornaments, thousands of yards of ribbons and thousands of jingle bells to ring in the holiday,” according to Salame-Aspiazu. The pop-up will close down after hosting a sold-out New Year’s Eve Ball on Monday night. This weekend, though, it’s open from 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Comedy: The Washington Improv Theater winds up the monthlong Seasonal Disorder series on Saturday. The Madeline comedy troupe will be joined by special guest teams Swoonface and The Female Accent. Seasonal Disorder has featured a rock concert by Heavy Rotation as well as other improv teams such as Hellcat and Love Onion. The final installment starts at 10 p.m. at the Source theater, 1835 14th St. NW. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $18 at the door.

The Capital Photography Center will host a class Saturday at Constitution Gardens on bird photography. (Photo courtesy of Capital Photography Center) Arts: Each winter, thousands of ducks flock to the Chesapeake Bay region. The Capital Photography Center presents a Wintering Waterfowl class to capture this beautiful phenomenon on camera this Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Photojournalist Emily Carter Mitchell will lead the workshop at Constitution Gardens on Constitution Avenue near 19th Street NW. This picturesque location captures the Washington Monument in the background. The $89 lesson covers fundamentals such as how to anticipate the bird’s behavior and select the correct camera for different lighting, plus technical tips for approaching the bird and taking better photos. Attendees are asked to bring a digital camera with a long-focal-length telephoto lens and tripod, plus extra memory and a spare battery.

Duede District Bookstore is hosting a holiday pop-up at the Brookland Arts Walk through Saturday. (Photo by Sloane Dakota Tucker courtesy of Duende District Bookstore) Holiday Market (last one of the season!): Duende District Bookstore partnered this year with A Creative DC, a project to showcase the city’s creative community, to form the Duende District Holiday Pop-Up. The shop — featuring books, artwork, author events and writing workshops — closes this weekend. It’s open on Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Wild Hand Studio on the Brookland Arts Walk at the Monroe Street Market, 625 Monroe St. NE.

Music: Enjoy the last few days of 2018 with an R&B Soulebration at The Pitch Tavern, 4015 Georgia Ave. NW. Featuring music by the Baltimore-based DJ Harvey Dent, the event is organized by SoulBounce, a global soul music website produced in the DC area that won a Soul Train Award in 2010 and was included in Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 list in 2011, among other accolades. The 21-and-over party on Saturday starts at 7 p.m. and runs until midnight. Tickets are $10 in advance and $20 at the door.

(Photo courtesy of Urban Adventure Squad) Family Fun: The Urban Adventure Squad is a program developed by the Urban Learning and Teaching Center, a nonprofit that offers hands-on activities for schoolchildren in the DC area. To celebrate the end of 2018 and to demonstrate the impact that we have on the environment, the group is hosting a carnival assembled almost entirely from recycled materials (including left-over election signs). The event will be at Temple Micah, 2829 Wisconsin Ave. NW, on Friday from 2 to 3:45 p.m. It is free for all ages with a suggested $5 donation.

Food & Drink: Treat yourself to the Willard InterContinental’s Holiday Afternoon Tea, which has been offered daily (except on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) since the start of December from 1 to 4 p.m. The last day to try it is Sunday. Reservations are required for the experience, which includes a harp performance and festive decor in the historic hotel’s Peacock Alley along with tea, sandwiches and pastries. The cost is $65 per person, or $75 per person with champagne. The price for each child ages 5 to 12 is $30; kids under 5 eat for free.
