DC City Council Releases Proclamation to Honor Washington Bach Consort

Resolution passes in recognition of the Consort’s 30th anniversary of their free cantata series

WASHINGTON, DC (April 17, 2019)—On May 6th the Council of the District of Columbia will honor Washington Bach Consort in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Consort’s free classical music performances. In their written proclamation, which passed on March 31st, The Council cited the Consort’s musical mission to “enrich the quality of life” by “recognizing that not everyone is able to afford a regular subscription concert ticket” and celebrated the Consort’s attempt to “reach as many people as possible”.

The celebration of the proclamation will take place on May 6th at the Consort’s newest free, noontime music series, The Capital Cantata Series at St. Peter’s Church on Capitol Hill (313 2nd Street, SE). Councilmember David Grosso will be on hand to make the proclamation publicly. The Capitol Cantata series began last year as part of the Consort’s ever-expanding mission to reach Washingtonians with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Washington Bach Consort began the Cantata Series  30 years ago at Church of the Epiphany under the artistic direction of founder, Dr. J. Reilly Lewis. Lewis passed away unexpectedly in 2016 and after an exhaustive search, the Consort named Dana Marsh as the new Artistic Director in 2018.

“For thirty years the Consort has been committed to equity and access,” says Marc Eisenberg, Executive Director of Washington Bach Consort. “The same incredible musicians our patrons pay $69 to see on Sunday, perform free on Monday and Tuesday afternoon downtown and on Capitol Hill. We appreciate the DC Council’s proclamation and especially DC Councilmember David Grosso’s recognition of our work in the community.”

For those unable to make the May 6th celebration, the Consort will hold their traditional free noontime series at Church of the Epiphany (1317 G Street, NW) the next day, May 7th. The May 7th cantata will be the final of the season.
