Washington, DC – October 22: Join the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCCADV) on October 24 by wearing purple to honor victims and support survivors of domestic violence on Purple Thursday. Purple Thursday is a fun, easy, and creative way to get involved and show your support for survivors and take a visible stand against domestic violence. This year, Mayor Bowser and the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives will stand with survivors of domestic violence by observing Purple Thursday.
“People often ask what they can do to end domestic violence,” said Karma Cottman, Executive Director of DCCADV. “Purple Thursday is one small way that each of us can participate. Collectively, we can send a clear message to domestic violence survivors that they are supported and make it clear that abuse will no longer be tolerated in our community.”
This year, DCCADV and its member programs will host Purple Thursday Fest, an event on the steps of the National City Christian Church designed to engage the community in conversation and activities around ending violence and supporting healthy relationships. Purple Thursday Fest will feature resource tables, and interactive activities for the community, as well as remarks from Mayor Bowser and performances from the Lion’s Den Dance Company, Batalá Washington, and more.
“50% of women in D.C. have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner,” said Dawn Dalton, Deputy Director of DCCADV. “How we show up and support survivors of domestic violence plays a vital role in how survivors heal from violence. This event is a great opportunity to take action, show support, and show how we believe survivors.”
Media are invited to attend. Details, including speakers and performers can be found on the DCCADV website.
DCCADV and our community partners will be hosting a series of events throughout the month. You can view the full calendar of events here: https://dccadv.org/take-action/dvam/dvam-calendar/
