Recent developments suggest that the city’s commitment to economic and personal freedom may be waning. The Healthy Beverage Choices Act of 2019 is a good example. The bill will impose a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened drinks. Why? A cynic might say that lawmakers who think their job is to regulate society will always find something to regulate.
