Washington, DC – Councilmember Todd has been appointed to serve as Chairman of the Large Cities Council of the National League of Cities in 2020 and to serve as Chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee, where he has served as Vice Chair for the last two years.
The National League of Cities (NLC) is a nonpartisan organization that serves as a resource and advocate for cities and their leaders across the country. NLC represents the interests of 19,000 cities, towns, and villages in the United States as well as professionals working in municipal government. The organization is recognized as a powerful and reliable partner and is respected among federal policymakers.
“I look forward to working with Vice Chairs: Council President Shannon Hardin of Columbus, OH and Vice Mayor Adam Medrano of Dallas, TX to facilitate the sharing of ideas and successful strategies to solve the challenges of Ward 4 and of the District of Columbia,” Councilmember Todd said. “I am grateful for opportunity to work with leaders across the nation on best practices for issues such as transportation, affordable housing, economic development, education, job creation, technology and infrastructure.”
The Large Cities Council is open to any local elected official who represents an NLC member city with a population of 200,000 or more. The Large Cities Council coordinates efforts to solve challenges affecting large cities.
Councilmember Todd was also elected to serve as Chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee, which he has been Vice Chair of for the last two years. The Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) is the entity certified by the Mayor of the District of Columbia and the Governors of Maryland and Virginia to prepare an air quality plan for the DC-MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area under Section 174 of the federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.
“Air quality is inextricably tied to climate change, which affects every single other issue before us,” Councilmember Todd said. “As Chairman of the Metropolitan Air Quality Committee, it is my duty to ensure that our air quality plan for the region and clean air efforts reflect the urgency of climate change. I am proud to represent Ward 4 and the District of Columbia in addressing these important issues.”
The MWAQC is under the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), where Councilmember Todd also serves on the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.
MWAQC members are elected officials of COG member jurisdictions plus members from Calvert County, MD and Stafford County, VA.
