Press Release: Capital Village School Will Open First Campus in D.C.’s Ward Five Near Rhode Island Metro

New Middle School Coming to Edgewood/Brentwood Neighborhood
Washington, DC – Capital Village Public Charter School today announced that Washington D.C.’s Ward Five will be the home of its first campus, a middle school opening in the Fall of 2020.
The new expeditionary learning school will be located at 705 Edgewood Avenue, NE, Washington DC, walking distance from Rhode Island Metro and Brookland Metro. The building sits adjacent to Metropolitan Branch Trail and is the former home of City Arts Public Charter School.
Executive Director Monica Green said, “We look forward to making Ward Five our home, getting to know the residents and becoming a valued asset to the community. Capital Village Public Charter School proudly welcomes families and learners from Ward Five and across all D.C. neighborhoods.”
Capital Village PCS is a small community school, born out of an urgent need to rethink traditional middle school settings where some students excel, but others fall through the cracks. Capital Village will meet the diverse needs of learners by focusing on the needs, interests, and ambitions of each individual learner, so all learners can grow. When a learner enrolls in Capital Village PCS, they are matched with a mentor and begins building an Individual Learning Plan alongside their family. Each Capital Village campus will serve no more than 180 learners, the first of which will be a middle school (5th – 8th grade) in Washington, DC.
Christopher Purdy, Board Chair of Capital Village said, “We’re proud to lay down roots in Ward Five and as a community school, we hope to build strong community partnerships which will be a core component of our learner’s overall experience.”
The DC Public Charter School Board voted and approved the charter for Capital Village Public Charter School on May 20, 2019 during their monthly school board meeting. The school will be a lottery-based public charter school network open to all students and families located in Washington, DC. The school is now enrolling founding families with students in grades five and six.
