This month, the New York City Council approved the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology Act. It was a monumental victory for police transparency, expanding legislative accountability over the most secretive parts of the New York Police Department, including facial recognition, more than 9,000 linked surveillance cameras, automated license plate readers and a host of other monitoring technologies.
