It’s never been a friendly building.” That is what D.C’s chief librarian, Richard Reyes-Gavilan, once said about the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. “Dirty, dark, unpleasant . . . a kind of negative space,” Dutch architect Francine Houben said after her visit to a building that had been the subject of a heated decades-long debate.
