WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that she has already secured enough original cosponsors – 169 – in the House of her District of Columbia statehood bill to break her own record for original cosponsors of the bill, with more than a month to go before the start of the next Congress.
“Our previous record of 155 original cosponsors for the D.C. statehood bill in the House, which we set this Congress, boded well for House passage of the D.C. statehood bill this year, which was the first time it passed in either chamber in the 219 years of the District’s existence. As of today, we’ve gathered 169 original cosponsors for next Congress, and I anticipate we will have more before we introduce the bill in January,” Norton said. “That’s broken our record for original cosponsors, with more than a month left before the start of the new Congress in January. Although we are starting the new Congress with a smaller House majority than Democrats had in the last Congress, we will have more original D.C. statehood bill cosponsors. This continuing groundswell of support, following House passage of our D.C. statehood bill in June, shows that statehood for the residents of the nation’s capital is within reach.”
