D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser relaxed a citywide curfew on Wednesday after a night of mostly peaceful demonstrations in the nation’s capital to protest the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police.
On Monday night, clashes between police and demonstrators culminated in a particularly intense confrontation on and around Swann Street, and on Wednesday police chief Peter Newsham defended the actions of officers involved.
As looters targeted businesses in D.C. during severe unrest that broke out in the early morning hours Monday over George Floyd’s death, one business on U Street was hit particularly hard.
