LinkLinksOpinion Washington Post Editorial Board: We must recognize the sacrifice of the officers who took their lives after Jan. 6 By Editor On Feb 19, 2021 Last updated Feb 19, 2021 15 Share THEIR NAMES are not as familiar as that of Brian D. Sicknick, the Capitol Police officer who lay in honor in the Capitol Rotunda in recognition of his heroism battling the rioters who swarmed the halls of Congress on Jan. 6. But D.C. police officer Jeffrey Smith and Capitol Police officer Howard Liebengood, who each died by suicide days after Jan. 6, were also casualties of that insurrection, and their service — their sacrifice — must also be recognized and honored. The tragic loss of these two lives should focus attention on the emotional injuries that often result from police work and the need for police departments to do a better job in addressing them. 15 Share FacebookTwitterReddItWhatsAppEmailPrint
