WASHINGTON, DC — Chairman Phil Mendelson released the following statement on the tragic death of Mercia Bowser:

“On this Day of Remembrance for the more than 1,000 lives lost to COVID-19 in the District of Columbia, my heartfelt sympathies go out to Mayor Bowser and the entire Bowser family on Mercia’s passing. 

Poet Maya Angelou said, ‘a great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.’ We are thankful for Mercia’s service to the city and the community. 

The bond between siblings is incredibly strong. No parent should outlive their child. The Mayor and her family have my sincerest condolences as they go through this tough time.”
