Rose Powhatan in The Post: D.C. once had an Indigenous queen, Cockacoeske, the Queen of Pamunkey. Remember her story.

I am an Indigenous female elder descended from the Pamunkey and the Tauxenent (Dogue) tribes. Both tribal nations were historic members of the Powhatan Paramountcy, which stretched all the way from today’s state of North Carolina to the 10-mile-square “Federal City,” later called Washington, D.C. There are many place names and stories connected to my ancestors here in my hometown. One of them honors our Pamunkey Queen Cockacoeske.

    We believe our Father’s side of the family, once considered mulattos, were mixed with Powhatan blood as they were descended from the Fairfax, VA now known as Odrick ‘s Corner. My DNA documents my American Indian heritage. I do not claim a tribe but knowing the history of the Hatcher’s in VA, this is the most likely association. So I find your article of great interest.
