“I am so grateful to my good friend Senator Tom Carper for his work securing an impressive, record-breaking 44 cosponsors for the D.C. statehood bill in the Senate,” Norton said.  “Every day, momentum continues to build for D.C. statehood, as we approach the brink of making Washington, Douglass Commonwealth the 51st state, which has 54% support nationwide, according to a recent poll.  Yesterday, the House Oversight and Reform Committee marked up my D.C. statehood bill, paving the way for House passage next week.  Senator Carper’s leadership has made the bill ready to cross the finish line in the Senate.

“Last year, when the House passed the D.C. statehood bill, it was the first time in history either chamber has passed the statehood bill.  We will pass the bill again next week in the House.  Senator Carper’s work has made it more likely than ever that we will also secure passage of the bill in the. Senate, providing D.C. residents with voting representation in Congress and full local self-government and finally ending taxation without representation.”
