Thanksgiving Day observance means most services will be closed or suspended.
(Washington, DC) The Department of Public Works announced today how services will be affected in observance of Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29.
Sanitation Services
Trash and Recycling Collections: Thursday’s trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day, Friday, November 29; Friday’s collections will be made Saturday. This applies to both once-a-week and twice-a-week collection neighborhoods. Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 p.m. the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 p.m. on the collection day. Otherwise, the property owner may be subject to sanitation enforcement.
Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed Thanksgiving Day and will reopen November 29, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Specific services are affected as follows:
- Trailers will not be allowed to dump.
- Personal document shredding will remain the first Saturday of the month (except holidays) only. The next shredding drop-off is Saturday, December 7.
- Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)/E-cycling drop-off is weekly on Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, DPW will conduct a monthly weekday HHW/e-cycling drop-off the Thursday before the first Saturday of each month (except holidays). The next Thursday HHW/e-cycling drop-off is Thursday, December 5, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- For more details about HHW/e-cycling/document shredding, go to dpw.dc.gov/service/household-hazardous-waste-e-cycling-document-shredding.
The Ft. Totten Transfer Station is located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE. Travelling east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street. Directions from additional locations can be found at dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.
Leaf Collections: Leaf collections are being made from “Area B” neighborhoods between Monday, November 25 and Saturday, November 30 (including Thanksgiving Day). DPW is following the collection schedule published in the leaf collection brochure mailed to households that receive DPW trash/recycling collections. “Area B” residents should rake their leaves into their tree box (or curb) to ensure leaves are ready when the crews come to collect them through November 29.
Residents can go to dpw.dc.gov/service/leaf-and-holiday-tree-collection to view the leaf collection schedule and can check the status of their specific collection by entering their address at leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/.
