This Legislation Creates an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Prevention Program led by the Deputy Mayor of Public Safety and Justice
Legislation Also Tasks the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement to Provide Trauma-Informed Training
Washington, DC – Today, Councilmember Brandon Todd (D-Ward 4) introduced the “Adverse Childhood Experience Prevention Program Amendment Act of 2020.”
In the District of Columbia, 47% of children and teens have experienced a traumatic event, according to the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health. As such, it is urgent that the District moves to ensure that our children have proper access to prevention and coping programs.
Adverse childhood experiences are stressful or traumatic events, including abuse and neglect, the death of a parent, divorce or separation, domestic violence, living with someone who has a mental illness or substance abuse problem, and the incarceration of a household member.
This legislation creates an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) prevention program to provide access to those who have been exposed to violence and have experienced trauma. The programs provide wellness and support for staff engaged in violence response and interruption efforts.
The legislation also tasks the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement to provide trauma-informed training to affected individuals.
“Adverse Childhood Experiences have a profound impact on one’s life,” Councilmember Todd said. “By creating and implementing prevention programs, we are helping children cope with these life altering experiences and empowering them to get back on their feet.”
