Press Release: Catholic Charities DC to Distribute Food to Hundreds of Families at RFK Stadium on Friday

WASHINGTON — On Friday, Aug. 21, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington will distribute 500 grocery boxes and ready-to-eat meals to families who have been affected by the economic downturn. This will be the 16th large-scale food distribution as part of Catholic Charities DC’s efforts to combat increasing food insecurity in the Washington area due to the pandemic. Since March, the agency has provided more than 720,000 meals across all its food assistance programs.
When: 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21. Media are encouraged to arrive about 10 a.m., as distribution will begin early if lines develop.
Where: RFK Stadium, Lot 5, 2400 East Capitol St. SE 20003

Details: Food will be distributed by Catholic Charities DC staff and volunteers in a drive-thru format in accordance with social distancing guidelines. Each car will receive a package of food that includes about seven pounds of meat and fish and 10 pounds of fresh produce. No walk-ups are allowed.
Packages also include a prepared family meal created by the eight-person staff of Catholic Charities DC’s KitchenWork program, a catering and job training pilot program based in Hyattsville. Friday’s meal includes fried chicken with gravy, roasted potatoes, and a squash medley.
In addition to the event at RFK Stadium, Catholic Charities DC’s regular food assistance initiatives include distributions at three food pantries, giveaways to seniors and school children, and dinners for the poor and homeless through St. Maria’s Meals and Meals & Hope food truck services. The agency can also assist individuals and families file for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits.
