New Soccer Mini-Pitch Opens at Petworth

(Washington, DC) – The Mayor Muriel Bowser Administration, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, DC SCORES, DC United, Musco Sports Lighting and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) join together to unveil a new hard surface soccer court at the Petworth Recreation Center (801 Taylor St, NW).  The mini-pitch futsal court unveiling will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018.

“We are excited to partner with the U.S. Soccer Foundation to present a space that will inspire our community to play, stay healthy and further the Mayor’s initiative to become a Fit DC,” said DPR Director Keith A. Anderson. “We want to open residents up to as many sports as possible and futsal takes soccer to a new level on a hard surface!”

The new multi-sport play space will increase access to soccer for more D.C. children and families and lighting at the pitch will ensure that the entire community can use the play space past daylight hours. This mini-pitch was funded by Musco Sports Lighting in honor of the opening the Audi Field last month in partnership with the U.S. Soccer Foundation.

The official dedication ceremony will be followed by an inaugural scrimmage with DC SCORES and DPR soccer camp youth on the new pitch. DC United players will serve as celebrity coaches for the match.

The new Petworth mini-pitch marks the latest development in the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s “It’s Everyone’s Game” national movement to ensure children in underserved communities can enjoy the health and youth development benefits of the game.

Futsal is a derivative of soccer, and is played with two, five-player teams. The sport is played on a basketball-style court, with a smaller, low-bouncing ball.  Like soccer, the objective is to score goals!
