Construction Phase of Ward Circle Full Signalization Project Begins Monday, June 4
(Washington, DC) – On Monday, June 4, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to begin the construction phase of the Ward Circle Full Signalization Project. This is the culmination of previous phases of the project.
The planning phase included a public meeting last year, and DDOT completed the design after coordinating with the National Park Service, which owns the park land at Ward Circle. The construction phase of the project is expected to take approximately 12 months.
Some of the key improvements of the project are:
- Full rebuild of all traffic signals with ADA compliant design including ramps and accessible pedestrian signals
- Signalization of Massachusetts Avenue approaches along with pedestrian signals at the crosswalks
- Blank-out LED signs to reinforce the left turn restrictions from the inner lanes of the circle
- New streetlight outside Katzen Arts Center
- Ward Circle will be repaved at the end of the project
This work aligns with the overall goals of the project, which are to improve safety for all users, including drivers and pedestrians, and to promote orderly traffic flow.
DDOT has also installed additional signs and markings at Ward Circle to improve safety and enforce the ban on left turns from the inner lanes. These include updating markings in the inner lanes, and installing additional signage.
The construction work will be done during non-rush hours only. There will be no work during rush hour or at nighttime. There may be some Saturday work. DDOT will minimize disruptions to traffic and sidewalk closures as much as possible during construction.
Motorists should anticipate moderate delays due to the construction work. Drivers are advised to stay alert while traveling through these locations and to be observant of the work zone.
