Bowser Administration Cuts Ribbon on Kennedy Street Project
Multi-Million Dollar Project Improves Safety and Increases Green Infrastructure
(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Bowser Administration today celebrated the completion of the Kennedy Street Revitalization Project, a collaborative effort that has improved pedestrian and traffic safety and increased green infrastructure. District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Jeff Marootian and Director of the Mayor’s Office on Community Affairs Charon Hines were joined by At-Large Councilmember Robert White, Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd, and DC Water Program Manager Seth Charde.
“Kennedy Street has a rich history and is a significant fixture in our community, and, today, we are proud to celebrate this tremendous revitalization,” Mayor Bowser said in a statement. “Projects like this one are how we build a safer, stronger DC and ensure that our neighborhoods continue to meet the needs of a growing city.”
The project, led by DDOT, represents a $10 million investment in safety and neighborhood enhancements in the Ward 4 neighborhoods of Brightwood and South Manor Park, spanning Kennedy Street from Georgia Avenue to North Capitol Street, and includes:
- ADA compliant wheel chair ramps at crosswalks and businesses along Kennedy Street;
- traffic calming measures at the intersection of Kennedy Street, Missouri Avenue, and Second Street, NW;
- more than 13,000 square feet of green space;
- 280 boxed parking spaces along Kennedy Street;
- LED streetlights;
- three bioretention ponds;
- new traffic lights;
- 28 park benches
- a new Capital Bikeshare station;
- new trash receptacles; and
- new trees and a brick sidewalk
“We are excited to complete such a major project for the residents and local businesses that make up the Kennedy Street community,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “This project is special because it combines safety, beautification, and infrastructure, all of which are critical to people who live in and visit the District every day.”
In addition to the upgrades listed above, the Bowser Administration is also partnering with DC Water to install green infrastructure in the 100 Block of Kennedy Street. The new infrastructure will manage stormwater runoff to reduce combined sewer overflows into Rock Creek Park and incudes bio-retention ponds, permeable parking lanes, drywells, landscape infiltration gaps, and new street trees.
