DCHA’s Second Annual Summer of Safety Kick-Off
Job Fair, Activities for Children, Community Safety Discussions, and More to be Featured
In an effort to make sure District of Columbia Housing Authority customers and their neighbors have a safe and productive summer, the agency is hosting an all-day event to kick off its Summer of Safety Initiative.
The event on Thursday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. will feature activities which will run throughout the day. DCHA customers and their neighborhoods will receive information on summer programming, meet their local police officers from DCHA and the Metropolitan Police Department, so that everyone can plan to have a fun and safe summer. The activities, including food and inflatable play areas, will be based at the King Greenleaf Recreation Center, located at 201 N Street, S.W., and the Southwest Family Enhancement and Career Center, located at 203 N Street, S.W.
At the festival, DCHA Police Chief Joel Maupin will showcase the new security trikes that will enhance his officers community policing and targeted patrols. In addition to walking patrols, bicycle patrols, and 3T Motion patrols, these all-terrain vehicles will increase the police force’s visible presence at DCHA communities this summer. Maupin also will implement targeted community policing, conduct outreach activities for youth and seniors, and engage the community with crime prevention activities.
In addition, there will be a job fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and small business workshops at noon and 2 p.m. at the Southwest Family Enhancement and Career Center. At 6 p.m., there will be a discussion about community safety featuring local officials, members of the policing community, a representative from the Department of Aging, and more. There also will be a larger information fair featuring community partners including various D.C. government agencies, East of the River Career Exposure Camp, United Health Care, D.C. Retro Jumpers, and many more.
